Weston Creek residents can now enjoy a funky new outdoor area at Trenerry Square near Cooleman Court, with a newly completed upgrade offering shoppers new grassed areas, shade elements, street furniture and bike racks.
Local MLAs Bec Cody and Chris Steel, representing the Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris, officially opened the new-look precinct today that is helping revitalise the local suburban shopping area and make it a more people-friendly place.
“I’m thrilled Trenerry Square is now complete, offering people a more attractive place to shop, meet up with friends for coffee, or drop in for lunch,” said Bec Cody.
“The ACT Government is committed to revitalising our suburban shopping centres to transform them into safe public space where families and friends can gather and spend time together.
“Recently Canberrans will have seen upgrades in Kambah, Spence and Charnwood. Trenerry Square has now joined this growing list and I know people will love coming here,” Ms Cody said.
Chris Steel said the Trenerry Square upgrades were community-led, with a new grassed area, shaded seating, and a new drinking fountain.
“We undertook consultation on the design of Brierly Street and Trenerry Square in mid-2016, and those who participated made it clear they wanted to see the area become a more welcoming space where people can meet and relax while doing their shopping.
“Lighting and new bins have also been installed in the area, and for those who cycle into the square, bike racks have been installed to provide a safe place to lock up bikes while grabbing a bite to eat or doing some shopping,” Mr Steel said.
