The secrets of Canberra’s healthiest workplaces revealed

June 28, 2017

Today, Chris Steel MLA, on behalf of the Minister for Health and Wellbeing, launched a new book highlighting the healthy work practices of Canberra workplaces over the past year.

The launch took place at the Healthier Work breakfast, bringing together local businesses and agencies which are committed to creating healthier workplaces.

The latest edition of the book highlights 40 case studies of workplaces, and the strategies and initiatives that have helped them implement and develop healthier working environments.

Workplaces play a key role in shaping the lifestyle and healthy choices of adults because most of us spend around half of our waking hours at work.

“The achievements of 68 amazing local businesses are showcased in this year’s book, with 40 detailed case studies, and 28 snapshots of the healthy work practices and outcomes that have been achieved in the past year,” Mr Steel said.

“We encourage all workplaces to get involved and build healthy and productive places for employees and to build on the healthy work practices of other businesses involved.”

Mr Steel said that some of the achievements by businesses involved in the Healthier Work initiative included:

  • Arrow FM commenced the Recognition program with only two staff. They are now Silver Status meaning they have evaluated their first 12 month health and wellbeing plan and have grown to a business of 15 staff. Their plan includes handball competitions, golf days, and healthy eating options at team meetings.
  • Richardson Primary School has seen a number of significant benefits from the Healthier Work Recognition Scheme. The school has noticed staff absenteeism has substantially reduced and they have had far less staff turnover.
  • The National Nursing Agency has noticed boosts in team morale, reduced sick leave, and a proactive engagement in healthy initiatives.”

Part of the breakfast saw the presentation of Healthier Work Recognition Certificates to Epicon IT Solutions, Fraser After School Care, and Red Cross for committing to a 12 month health and wellbeing plan for their organisations.

In addition, the Office of Parliamentary Counsel received a Silver Status aware for completing their initial 12 month plan and committing to a further 12 months.

OPC IT received a Healthier Work Recognition Trophy for achieving Gold Status, and Questacon received a trophy for joining the Recognition XL program as a larger sized workplace.
