Woden’s regeneration - May update

May 17, 2018

Thank you to everyone who has supported my campaign for Woden's regeneration.

We are beginning to see real change- with new investment in the redevelopment of old buildings, Light Rail Stage 2 on its way and our focus on ‘place making’ in the centre.

PLANS FOR ALEXANDER & ALBEMARLE BUILDINGS

Last month preliminary plans to redevelop the Alexander and Albemarle buildings were released by their private owners, the DOMA Group.

The main towers are proposed to be re-purposed into more than 200 residential apartments. Other plans for the site include, parking, a long day care centre, a gym and an 'eat street' with restaurants/cafes and a micro-brewery.

I welcome the proposal and the investment it represents in bringing life to our Town Centre. I will update residents once the formal plans are lodged for the community to review and make their comments. Only an internal render of a view from inside an apartment is available online (as shown below), though the full preliminary plans were presented this this month.

PLANS LODGED FOR TRADIES AND QUALITY HOTEL SITE

Plans have also now been formally submitted for the new WOVA development on the corner of Melrose Dr and Launceston Street, Phillip.

The development will consist of four multi-unit residential buildings, with around 800 apartments, contemporary workspaces, and public and private amenities.

The plans can be reviewed here. The new WOVA development Corner Melrose Dr and Launceston St, Phillip.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON WODEN TOWN SQUARE

We want your views on how to activate Woden Town Square during the discovery phase of the #WodenExperiment - as part of our efforts to support the regeneration of the Town Centre.

It is envisaged that the Woden Experiment will involve a six month installation in the Square beginning in August, which will help activate the area and make it a more welcoming place for people.

For those that missed out on the #WodenExperiment Town Hall back in March - please have your say by completing the Woden Experiment Community Survey.

LIGHT RAIL FROM THE CITY TO WODEN

The Government is continuing to progress our stage 2 of light rail which will have significant regenerative effect on Woden Town Centre.

The Light Rail route from Civic to Woden has been announced with the route through Parkes and Barton preferred (see map below).

This route provides the best access through the Parliamentary zone to employment hubs, cultural institutions and other places of interest.

Further detail on the stops and route alignment for Light Rail Stage 2 will be provided in the business case which is in development.

MORE RAPID BUSES THROUGH WODEN

Later this year the ACT Government is introducing new Rapid Buses through Woden, providing services 7 days a week (on the same number) every 15 minutes or better on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends.

  • The Purple Rapid - Lanyon - Erindale, Mawson, Woden through to Hughes, Barton Russell and the City (with connections to the Airport).
  • The Orange Rapid - Woden to Cooleman Court through to Molonglo and the City.

This is in addition to the the Green Rapid (No.6) from Woden to Garran, Narrabundah, Manuka, Kingston, Barton and the City introduced in November last year - which is already one of the most popular routes on the network.

I will continue to update you on our regeneration efforts in Woden Town Centre following the ACT Budget in June.

Please make sure to keep up to date on Woden’s regeneration by adding your name to my mailing list here.

If there are any ACT Government matters I can assist with, please do not hesitate to get in contact.

Kind regards,
