Since being elected to the Assembly in October last year, there has been significant progress in Weston Creek, with a focus on delivering better health and education for our growing city.
Better health care
With an ageing population in Weston Creek, it is particularly important that we expand access to quality local health care services.
That's why in the Budget in June, the ACT Labor Government funded the design of a new Weston Creek region Nurse-Led Walk-in Centre. The Walk-in Centre will provide free advice and treatment for people with minor illness and injury, led by nurses including nurse practitioners. This investment is delivering on Labor's commitment for a new nurse-led walk-in centre for the Weston Creek region and I look forward to updating you as this work progresses.
To address the shortage of bulk-billing doctors, the Budget will also deliver $1 million over three years to incentivise more GP groups to deliver bulk-billed care on the Southside.
This is in addition to funding of $70 million to expand the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children, including establishing a dedicated adolescent mental health unit. The Government will also invest $236 million for the new hospital building at the Canberra Hospital as part of our 10 year health plan.
As a former education advocate, I am also proud that the ACT Government will invest $85 million for the renewal of Canberra’s school facilities, including new learning spaces, toilets and change rooms, garden and horticultural facilities, heating and cooling upgrades and energy efficiency improvements for schools including Mount Stromlo High School. This investment will ensure our schools continue to support high quality education.
ONGOING PROJECTS IN WESTON CREEK
I also wanted to update you on a range of projects for Weston Creek:
Upgrades around Cooleman Court
Work is progressing on the upgrades to Brierly Street and Trenerry Square at Cooleman Court. This will involve upgrading seating, trees and landscaping, more shade as well as more space to be dedicated to events and community activities. Construction will start on the site mid-year.
The Weston Line bus service to the City and Woden via Cooleman Court has been very successful, with high passenger numbers. This month the Government has announced that we will continue the service with plans to make it a Rapid bus service (every 15 minutes) in the future.
Stromlo Forest Park Pool
The ACT Government is investing $33 million to build a 50 metre indoor pool for Molonglo and Weston Creek to be completed by Summer 2019. Over 700 submissions were received from the community during consultations on the design. Following a review, the Government has also agreed to include provisions for a gym or health club that will include hydrotherapy, leisure and toddler amenities as well as more seating and lighting. The design will allow for future expansion of the facility.
Cotter Road duplication
Work is well underway on the Cotter Road duplication which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Fortnightly green bin collections have begun in Weston Creek with a huge take up of 7000 households taking part in the pilot. If you would like to participate in the ACT Government's garden waste collection service, you can contact Access Canberra on 02 6270 5000 or visit the website.
